In short: Yes, kombucha contains some caffeine – but significantly less than coffee. Because we brew kombucha from real tea, a small amount of caffeine remains in the bottle after fermentation.
Why is there caffeine in kombucha at all?
Kombucha is made from sweetened tea fermented with a kombucha culture – the SCOBY. Our base is an infusion of green and black tea, and both types of tea naturally contain caffeine. A portion of this therefore ends up in the finished kombucha.
How much caffeine is in it?
Less than you might think. During fermentation, the cultures break down some of the caffeine – in the end, about up to a third of the original tea caffeine remains. How much exactly depends on the amount of tea, the steeping time, and the duration of fermentation, and can vary slightly from batch to batch. Therefore, a precise milligram figure for a handcrafted and raw brewed beverage like ours does not exist – but it remains low.
Kombucha in comparison: coffee, tea & co.
For a rough classification, from most to least caffeine:
- Coffee – most
- Black tea – medium
- Kombucha – little, only a fraction of a cup of coffee
- Fruit and herbal tea – caffeine-free
A glass of kombucha will therefore not bring you to coffee levels – it is more comparable to a light cup of tea.
Can I drink kombucha in the evening?
For most people, this is not a problem because there is so little caffeine in it. If you are very sensitive to caffeine, it is best to drink your kombucha spread throughout the day rather than just before bedtime.
Does Verment Kombucha contain caffeine?
Yes, a little. All our varieties are brewed from organic green and black tea, raw and unpasteurized. The caffeine content is low – but our kombucha is not completely caffeine-free. We believe: honesty is better than wishful thinking.
